Zanzibar representatives Mafunzo Women SC held home side Rayon Sports WFC to a goalless draw in their opening match at the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFa qualifiers.

Mafunzo Women SC dominated the match for long spells, but failed to find the net on Friday at the Kigali Pele Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

After a goalless first half Mafunzo Women SC had the best chance to score after 81 minutes when skipper Cynthia Shilwatso Musungu blasted a shot on the woodwork.

The home side also had Josiane Uwihirwe hit the post with three minutes of added time remaining.

“We are happy to pick a point from our opening match and we hope to come stronger in the two remaining Group A matches,” said Musungu.

The second match saw Yei Joint Stars FC (South Sudan) beat Denden FC (Eritrea) 3-0. Mafunzo Women SC now placed second on the table will return to action on Sunday against table leaders Yei Joint Stars FC.

Action continues on Saturday with 2024 champions Commercial Bank of Ethiopia taking on FC Ujeco (Djibouti) in a Group B match, while Simba Queens from Tanzania face Top Girls Academy (Burundi) in a Group C match at the same Kigali Pele Stadium
